Winter Remedies from Ayurveda

Ayurveda offers some traditional herbals for use during winter. Actually, all of these can be used anytime, but they are especially helpful for transitions going into winter, okr winter to spring. It is at these transition points that we can be most vulnerable.

These 3 herbal preparations can help bolster your natural immunity:

Nasya

Nasya protects nasal mucous membranes, alleviating chest congestion and stabilizing and grounding our energies (the cold and dry qualities of winter can aggravate vata).

This video introduces nasya - an herbalized oil used to lubricate nasal passages. This is important in maintaining natural immunity, as dry mucous membranes can become fragile and more susceptible to infection. The nasya oil is sniffed upwards, where it acts like aromatherapy, bringing the essence of the herbs, and the vata-pacifying effect of the oils - to the mind.

Amla

Amla is also known as Indian Gooseberry. It is extremely high in vitamin C and known for its sour taste. It is often used in tea, jams, or other preparations to boost immunity. It is especially helpful in relieving congestion.

Chyawanprash

Lastly, an herbal jam known as Chyawanprash, is generally recommended at the start of the winter season, to continue until the season changes.

Would you like to try one of these herbals? There are many to choose from, from all the ancient healing traditions that knew how to bolster resilience during the changing seasons.

To your health,

Dr. Philippa
